Animals as legal persons?

Pets may be our best friends and part of our families. But, should the law recognize them as beings for purposes of protection. In South Korea, the legislature is considering doing just that (see link). In case you granting an animal legal status is crazy, just consider that New Zealand and India have granted rivers legal status (see my earlier blog post).
